Latest updateAugust 9, 2026Chips Took 8 Days, Cars Took 22 — The Kumamoto Earthquake Wrap-Up, and Why the Buildings Weren't What Split the Recovery
One day after the M7.1 Kumamoto earthquake, the recovery has split in two. TSMC's JASM fab passed its structural inspection unscathed and is gradually resuming operations — remarkably fast for a fab that shook at intensity 5+. Renesas, however, found cracked walls, water leaks and fallen ceiling panels at its two Kumamoto plants, Sony's sensor fab has no restart date, and the Tokyo market punished the sector: Tokyo Electron fell more than 11% intraday. Meanwhile, Japan's government is examining whether the quake ruptured only part of its fault — which would mean the sequence may not be over.

This is the day-2 update to our initial status report on every Kumamoto fab and our analysis of aftershock risk and backup production sites. This article is also available in Japanese as the day-2 follow-up report, alongside the Japanese day-1 report. All information below reflects July 29, Japan time; closing prices and the evening's new disclosures are covered in the "July 29 evening update" section near the end.

[July 30 update] The status three days after the quake — TSMC's third statement, why equipment recalibration is taking this long, and the 2016 precedent — is covered in our day-3 follow-up report.

In Plain Terms (Beginner)

The good news: TSMC checked its buildings, found no damage, and is carefully restarting its Kumamoto fab. The bad news: Renesas, which makes chips for cars, found cracked walls and fallen ceiling panels at its plants and does not know when it can restart. Sony's camera-sensor factory is also still closed. In the stock market, Tokyo Electron — the company that makes chipmaking machines only in Kumamoto — fell more than 11% at one point. Japan's weather agency still warns that strong aftershocks may continue for about a week.

Day-2 verified status: JASM structural check complete, Fab 1 unscathed, gradually resuming (no full-recovery declaration; Fab 2 construction partially suspended for aftershock risk). Renesas: only confirmed physical damage in the cluster — wall cracks, leaks, fallen ceiling panels at Kawajiri (8-inch, ~60% automotive) and Nishiki; WIP impact under investigation, restart TBD. Sony Kikuyo: down, no timeline; Koshi Fab 2 undamaged; Nagasaki/Oita/Kagoshima preparing to resume. TEL Kyushu: official 2nd notice — inspections complete, no major damage, full operation targeted from next week, earnings impact judged 'minor'. Mitsubishi Electric: first official notice — no major building damage, Kumamoto sites still suspended, restart TBD. Market (close): TEL −10.59%, Renesas −8.43%, SUMCO −6.10%, Disco −6.52% vs Sony +4.01%; Nikkei −1.49% vs TOPIX +0.26% — selective, not systemic, and amplified by 4-day SOX losing streak + pre-FOMC positioning. TSMC Taiwan closed −3.51%, TAIEX −3.76% (Taiwan media not attributing to the quake). Seismology: depth revised to 16 km (provisional); Earthquake Research Committee examining unbroken southern Hinagu fault; 2016 foreshock-mainshock precedent (M7.3 came 28 hours after M6.5) keeps restart decisions conservative.

What changed in 24 hours?

The table summarizes the verified position as of the afternoon of July 29. Inspections are ongoing, so the picture can still move.

The core pattern is that "the building is safe" and "the fab is running" are far apart. The newest fab in the prefecture — JASM, built after 2016 to current seismic standards — restarted first, while the damage concentrated at Renesas Kawajiri, a fab operating since 1970. The age of the building stock is translating directly into recovery speed.

Is TSMC back to normal operations?

The precise answer is: returning, but not yet returned. Three facts are confirmed by TSMC's statements. First, all employees were confirmed safe by the night of the quake. Second, structural inspections are complete and the first fab is unscathed. Third, operations are "gradually resuming" (Focus Taiwan, Reuters, July 28–29, 2026).

However, three things remain unsaid. TSMC has not given a date for full normal operation, has not released the results of its equipment and work-in-progress assessments, and has not quantified any production or shipment impact. The company itself says detailed inspections and impact evaluation continue. Moreover, TSMC preventively suspended part of the construction work on its second Kumamoto fab — not because of damage, but because of aftershock risk. In other words, TSMC is still pricing in the JMA's warning.

Even so, the speed is notable. A front-end fab that shook at intensity 5+ reached "gradual resumption" within a day. Compare that with 2016, when Sony's Kumamoto fab needed about 1.5 months just to restart wafer input. The difference is largely generational: JASM's building was designed after — and because of — the 2016 earthquakes.

How serious is the Renesas damage?

Renesas is, so far, the only semiconductor maker in the prefecture with confirmed physical damage: cracked walls, water leaks and fallen ceiling panels at both the Kawajiri front-end fab and the Nishiki back-end plant. The impact on production equipment and in-process wafers is under investigation, and no restart date has been given (Nikkei, July 29, 2026, 12:40 JST).

The fallen ceiling panels deserve particular attention, because of what happened in 2016. In the last Kumamoto earthquake, suspended cleanroom ceilings failed and destroyed the rooms' particle-controlled environment, and at one plant 18% of the production tools shifted position by 11 mm or more (Denshi Device Sangyo Shimbun, 2016). For a wafer fab, the killer is rarely the shaking itself; it is the loss of cleanroom integrity and the misalignment of precision tools, each of which takes weeks to months to requalify. A fallen ceiling panel strongly suggests the cleanroom beneath it has lost its integrity.

The supply-chain exposure is automotive. Kawajiri runs 8-inch wafers with roughly 60% of output going to automotive microcontrollers. Two mitigating factors exist: Renesas proved in 2016 that its post-2011 business-continuity plan shortens recovery, and automotive customers typically hold buffer inventory. Therefore car production will not stop this week. But if the outage stretches into months, an industry that still remembers the 2021 chip shortage will start to feel it.

How did markets react?

July 29 was the first Tokyo session to price the earthquake. The Nikkei average opened 369 yen higher, then reversed, fell more than 1,900 yen at one point, and closed down 930.73 yen (−1.49%) at 61,434.19 — a two-month low (NHK, Nikkei, July 29, 2026). However, attributing the whole move to the earthquake would be wrong: the US SOX semiconductor index had fallen four sessions in a row, SK Hynix dropped sharply in Seoul the same morning, and the FOMC decision was due overnight Japan time. The earthquake was one ingredient in a broader risk-off day.

The earthquake's specific signature shows up in the cross-section. At the close, Tokyo Electron was down 10.59% (as much as 11.77% intraday), Renesas 8.43% (a fourth straight losing session), SUMCO 6.10% and Disco 6.52% — losses concentrated in companies with Kumamoto exposure and in equipment and materials names. The broader market told a different story: TOPIX actually closed up 0.26% (Nikkei, Kabutan, July 29, 2026). The market, in other words, sold the single-site risk we flagged on day 1 — Tokyo Electron's coater/developers, made effectively only in Kumamoto — hardest of all.

Sony was the counterintuitive mover, closing up 4.01% despite its halted Kumamoto fab. No definitive explanation exists yet; the plausible reading is that its smartphone-sensor mainstay sits in Nagasaki, limiting group-level impact, and the broad market was risk-on outside semiconductors. Reconstruction-related names (builders, a Kumamoto-based homebuilder) attracted speculative buying, and insurer Tokio Marine rose 1.89% — no insurance-loss panic. In Taiwan, TSMC closed down 3.51% at NT$2,200 and the TAIEX fell 3.76% to 40,039.18 — its seventh-largest point drop on record, though it held the 40,000 line. Notably, Taiwanese media attributed the fall primarily to global risk-off sentiment and US equity weakness rather than to the Kumamoto earthquake; local analysts advised waiting for the dust to settle before buying the dip (ETtoday, Yahoo Taiwan Finance, July 29, 2026). TSMC's ADRs had already closed the US session down a moderate 1.70%.

Did the aftershock outlook change?

The JMA's warning is unchanged: earthquakes up to intensity 7 remain possible for about a week from the main shock, with the highest frequency in the first two to three days. The agency did update the physics: the hypocenter depth was revised from about 10 km (preliminary) to 16 km (provisional). Through 8 p.m. on July 28, 61 aftershocks of intensity 1 or greater had occurred; the largest so far is a M6.1 at 5:08 p.m. that day (intensity 5-), and none has exceeded intensity 5- since. Activity continues, however — Uki City recorded intensity 4 again early on July 29 (JMA, Weathernews, July 29, 2026).

The more consequential development is geological. Japan's Earthquake Research Committee convened an extraordinary session on July 29 to examine whether the quake ruptured the southern section of the Hinagu fault zone — the section that did not break in 2016. University of Tokyo seismologist Shinichi Sakai points to exactly that possibility, and experts note the fault's Yatsushiro-Sea segment, rated for up to M7.3, may still hold unreleased stress (NHK, Nikkei, July 28–29, 2026). Combined with the 2016 precedent — where the M7.3 main shock arrived 28 hours after what everyone initially called the main quake — this is why no company in the cluster is rushing its restart, and why announced timelines should be read as conditional on the next few days staying quiet.

Infrastructure is partially recovering: power outages fell from about 48,000 to about 32,000 households and water outages from a peak of 140,000 to about 84,000; parts of the Kyushu Expressway reopened, though one Minami-Kyushu Expressway section has bridge-girder damage that will take time, and the Kyushu Shinkansen remained suspended through the morning of July 29 (NHK, NEXCO West, July 29, 2026). The human toll stands at 13 dead including cases under review, and Japan's Self-Defense Force deployment was raised to 4,600 personnel.

July 29 evening update: what emerged after the close

Several important updates arrived in the evening. First, Sony published an official notice dated July 29: the Kumamoto Technology Center has been out of production since the quake while building and facility damage is assessed, its Nagasaki, Oita and Kagoshima sites suffered no major damage, and no restart date is given (Sony Semiconductor Solutions, July 29, 2026).

Second, Mitsubishi Electric's halt was confirmed through media reporting. According to Nikkei, the company has stopped operations at its two power-semiconductor plants in Kikuchi and Koshi; no visible damage has been found and safety checks continue, while its assembly plants in Nagasaki and Fukuoka have already resumed. The company has still issued no official release (Nikkei, updated 3:20 p.m. JST).

Third, the Renesas picture sharpened — in a mildly positive direction. The leak at Kawajiri forced a temporary shutdown of the ultrapure-water supply, but air conditioning and power stayed up and the cleanroom environment has been maintained at both plants (Nikkei xTECH, July 29, 2026). That rules out the worst-case reading of "fallen ceiling panels" — a full loss of cleanroom integrity — although no restart date has been set.

Fourth, the downstream impact widened. Toyota re-suspended its three Fukuoka plants from the evening of July 29 through July 31, reversing the morning's restart, citing safety, logistics and supplier conditions; Honda extended its Kumamoto motorcycle plant's halt to July 31 (Nikkei, updated 4:52 p.m. JST). For now this is a logistics-and-suppliers problem, not a chip-shortage problem — but the two converge if fab outages stretch.

Then came the day's most consequential disclosure. Tokyo Electron published an official second notice: safety inspections found no major damage to buildings or equipment at either the Koshi or Ozu plant, the company will work toward full production and development operation from next week, and it judges the impact on earnings to be "minor" (Tokyo Electron, July 29, 2026). The single-site coater/developer risk we flagged as the industry's biggest exposure has, for now, avoided the worst case.

Mitsubishi Electric also issued its first official notice, dated July 29: no injuries, no major building damage found so far, but its Kumamoto-area production sites remain suspended for safety checks, with no restart date or earnings guidance (Mitsubishi Electric, July 29, 2026).

The seismological picture also firmed up. The JMA's fourth bulletin (3 p.m., July 29) counted 194 earthquakes of intensity 1 or greater as of 2 p.m., confirmed the revised 16 km depth, and maintained the one-week intensity-7 warning. The government's Earthquake Research Committee formally published its evaluation the same day: the quake most likely ruptured the section of the Hinagu fault zone left unbroken by the 2016 earthquakes.

The aftershock sequence then underlined the warning. At 10:19 p.m. on July 29, a M5.8 aftershock — the largest since the main shock — struck the Amakusa-Ashikita region, registering intensity 5- in Yatsushiro and Kami-Amakusa, followed by an intensity-4 quake at 11:02 p.m. (NHK, July 29, 2026). The location, toward the southern (Yatsushiro Sea) end of the Hinagu fault zone, is exactly where seismologists worry about remaining stress. The "next 2–3 days" caution remains very much live.

On the fab side, TSMC issued its third statement since the quake: utility systems at the JASM wafer fab are back to normal operation, equipment inspection and recalibration are under way, and construction at the second fab resumed on July 29. However, Nikkei reports that Fab 1 shook hard enough that equipment inspection and adjustment will take some time, and no full-recovery date has been given (DigiTimes, Nikkei, July 29, 2026). Tokyo Electron Kyushu's restart date firmed up to Monday, August 3 (Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun, July 29, 2026).

Outside Kumamoto Prefecture, recovery accelerated: Sony's Nagasaki, Oita and Kagoshima fabs all resumed production by 6 p.m. on July 29, and Mitsubishi Electric's back-end assembly plants in Nagasaki and Fukuoka are already running — leaving only the Kumamoto sites offline. Ebara's Nankan plant announced a July 30 restart. Meanwhile, the prefecture counted building or equipment damage at 63 of its 515 invited companies (as of 2 p.m.), and Nikkei flagged port damage as a risk that could prolong supply-chain disruption. JR Kyushu aims to restore Shinkansen service between Chikugo-Funagoya and Kumamoto during July 30 (Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun, Nikkei, FBS, July 29, 2026).

Key takeaways

  • TSMC's JASM passed structural inspection with Fab 1 unscathed and is gradually resuming operations — but has not declared full normal operation, and suspended some Fab 2 construction work as an aftershock precaution.
  • Renesas is the only chipmaker with confirmed physical damage: cracked walls, leaks and fallen ceiling panels at two plants, with no restart date. The 2016 precedent says ceiling and cleanroom damage is what turns weeks into months.
  • Tokyo Electron's official second notice reported no major damage, full operation targeted from next week and a "minor" earnings impact — defusing the industry's biggest single-site risk. Sony and Mitsubishi Electric also issued official notices; both keep their Kumamoto sites suspended with no restart date.
  • The Tokyo market sold the sector selectively — Tokyo Electron closed −10.59% and Renesas −8.43% while TOPIX finished positive — amplified by US chip-stock weakness and FOMC caution. Sony closed up 4.01%.
  • The JMA revised the depth to 16 km (provisional) and kept its one-week intensity-7 warning. The Earthquake Research Committee is examining whether the southern Hinagu fault ruptured — meaning the possibility of a larger follow-on quake is not yet closed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q.Has TSMC's Kumamoto fab resumed normal operations?+

Not fully, but it is getting there. TSMC stated that structural inspections found the first fab unscathed, all employees are safe, and operations are 'gradually resuming.' However, detailed equipment inspections and impact assessments continue, and TSMC has not declared a full return to normal operations as of July 29. Construction work on the second fab was partially and preventively suspended because of aftershock risk (Focus Taiwan, Reuters, July 28–29, 2026).

Q.Which chip plant suffered actual damage from the Kumamoto earthquake?+

Renesas is the only semiconductor maker with confirmed physical damage as of July 29: cracked walls, water leaks and fallen ceiling panels at its Kawajiri and Nishiki plants. The impact on production equipment and work-in-progress wafers is under investigation, and there is no restart date (Nikkei, July 29, 2026, 12:40 JST).

Q.How did semiconductor stocks react to the Kumamoto earthquake?+

At the July 29 close, Tokyo Electron fell 10.59% (as much as 11.77% intraday), Renesas 8.43%, SUMCO 6.10% and Disco 6.52%, while Sony closed up 4.01%. The selling concentrated on equipment and materials names with Kumamoto exposure: the Nikkei average lost 1.49% while TOPIX actually finished up 0.26%. Note that the US SOX index had fallen four straight sessions and the FOMC decision was pending, so the drop is not attributable to the earthquake alone.

Q.Could an even bigger earthquake follow, as in 2016?+

It cannot be ruled out. Japan's Earthquake Research Committee met on July 29 to discuss the possibility that the quake ruptured the southern, previously unbroken section of the Hinagu fault zone. In 2016, a M6.5 foreshock was followed 28 hours later by the M7.3 main shock. The JMA continues to warn of intensity-7-class quakes for about a week, and experts note the Yatsushiro-Sea segment of the fault may still hold accumulated stress.
